TRAILS This reserve is being developed around the Sterkfontein Dam, an 18 000-ha catchment area. The dam is unusual in that it is filled with water pumped over the Drakensberg Escarpment from the Tugela River. The reserve lies in the foothills of the Drakensberg and its vegetation mainly consist of mountain grassland. Yellowwood trees are found in the ravines, however, and proteas and Natal bottle brush grow on the slopes. Oribi, southern reedbuck, mountain reedbuck and grey rhebok occur, as do a number of interesting birds such as bald ibis, blue and white-bellied korhaans, buffstreaked chat, ground woodpecker, bearded and Cape griffons, and black and martial eagles. Future plans include the development of hiking trails and overnight facilities and the stocking of game species such as blesbok, black wildebeest, eland and red hartebeest. Location: Far eastern part of Free State; south-west of Harrismith. Access: From Harrismith take the N5 towards Bethlehem and after about 5 km turn left onto the R712 towards QwaQwa and the Oliviershoek Pass; continue for about 8 km follow the signpost, pointing right, to the Sterkfontein Dam.
